Key Players in the Propaganda Machine

Several key figures played significant roles in propagating negative views about cannabis. Harry J. Anslinger, the first commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, was a major player. His aggressive anti-cannabis campaigns were driven by racism and personal vendettas (source). Anslinger’s influence led to the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, effectively criminalizing cannabis.

Propaganda Tactics

The methods used to spread cannabis propaganda were varied and pervasive. Newspapers, radio shows, and films were all employed to create a narrative that cannabis was a dangerous and addictive drug. William Randolph Hearst, a powerful newspaper magnate, used his media empire to publish countless articles demonizing cannabis (source). These stories often played on racial fears and exaggerated the drug’s effects. The impact of this early propaganda was profound. Public perception of cannabis shifted dramatically, leading to strict laws and harsh penalties. Many people were unjustly incarcerated, and entire communities were disproportionately affected by these draconian laws (source).
