Honoring Juneteenth: Freedom, Equity, and the Work Ahead

Juneteenth is a day of remembrance, reflection, and resolve. It commemorates June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. While the day marks a historic step forward, it also reminds us that freedom has never been experienced equally, and that the work of justice is still unfinished.

At Higher Collective, we recognize Juneteenth as more than a historical milestone. It is a reminder to center equity, to honor Black resilience and leadership, and to continue building systems that create real access and opportunity. As a social equity-based business, our mission is rooted in the belief that representation, ownership, and inclusion must be part of the future we build together.

The cannabis industry exists within a larger history shaped by exclusion, inequity, and harmful enforcement that has disproportionately impacted Black communities. Juneteenth asks us to confront that history honestly, not to dwell in it, but to learn from it and move with greater intention. Progress matters, but so does accountability, and there is still much work to do to create an industry and a culture that are truly inclusive.

Higher Collective is proud to stand for a different model. Our stores are built around social equity, and we are committed to creating spaces where people feel welcome, respected, and empowered. We believe the future of cannabis should reflect the diversity of the communities it serves, and that means making room for voices, leaders, and entrepreneurs who have too often been left out.

On Juneteenth, we invite our community to pause and reflect on what freedom means - not only in history, but in practice. It means access. It means dignity. It means opportunity. It means continuing to support Black-owned businesses, uplift underrepresented communities, and push for meaningful change in the spaces we influence.

Today and every day, Higher Collective stands in solidarity with those carrying this work forward. We honor the legacy of Juneteenth by recommitting ourselves to equity, inclusion, and collective progress - because celebrating freedom also means continuing to fight for it.
