Honoring Juneteenth: Freedom, Equity, and the Work Ahead

Juneteenth is a day of remembrance, reflection, and resolve. It commemorates June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. While the day marks a historic step forward, it also reminds us that freedom has never been experienced equally, and that the work of justice is still unfinished.

At Higher Collective, we recognize Juneteenth as more than a historical milestone. It is a reminder to center equity, to honor Black resilience and leadership, and to continue building systems that create real access and opportunity. As a social equity-based business, our mission is rooted in the belief that representation, ownership, and inclusion must be part of the future we build together.

The cannabis industry exists within a larger history shaped by exclusion, inequity, and harmful enforcement that has disproportionately impacted Black communities. Juneteenth asks us to confront that history honestly, not to dwell in it, but to learn from it and move with greater intention. Progress matters, but so does accountability, and there is still much work to do to create an industry and a culture that are truly inclusive.
